چکیده

Consider the mean field limit of a model for multiple HTTP sources multiplexed through a drop-tail router. The limit may exhibit two stationary regimes. In the fluid regime the flows are independent, there are no packet losses and the average throughput is high. In the turbulent regime the flows are synchronized, there are periodic congestion epochs with packet losses and the average throughput is reduced. In the prelimit with a finite number of sources the above regimes become metastable in the sense that we observe periodic fluctuations between the fluid and turbulent regimes. This paper outlines a general framework for describing these metastable regimes.

On randomizing the sending times in TCP and other window based algorithms

Current implementations of TCP suffer from serious performance problems like unfairness to flows with higher round trip times (RTTs), synchronization and phase effects in flows and correlated losses leading to throughput degradations under a wide range of scenarios. In this paper we propose a solution to these issues by randomizing the packet sending times at TCP sources (called Randomized TCP)...

Improving the Performance of Interactive TCP Applications using End-point Based and Network Level Techniques

--Recent measurement based studies reveal that most of the Internet connections are short in terms of the amount of traffic they carry, while a small fraction of the connections are carrying a large portion of the traffic.. Most of these short flows are from interactive applications like telnet, gaming that use TCP protocol for connection establishment and data transfer. These short TCP flows s...

Congestion Control and Periodic Behavior Anna

used by TCP and other transport protocols — causes the transmission rate of a long-lived flow to oscillate. This paper is about the tendency of multiplexed flows on a bottleneck link to oscillate causing " aggregate periodic behavior ". As a consequence, bottleneck links can become underutilized, wasting capacity. One simple way to prevent this is to use larger buffers in the bottleneck router....

The effect of multiplexing delay on MMORPG TCP traffic flows

Traffic optimization techniques, based on header compression, multiplexing and tunneling a number of concurrent flows, have been proposed in order to save bandwidth and to reduce the amount of packets per second in certain network segments. These techniques have been standardized for VoIP flows, but they can also be applied to the flows of online games. As a counterpart of the savings, the addi...

SCTP Tunneling: Flow Aggregation and Burst Transmission to Save Energy for Multiple TCP Flows over a WLAN

To raise the energy efficiency of wireless clients, it is important to sleep in idle periods. When multiple network applications are running concurrently on a single wireless client, packets of each application are sent and received independently, but multiplexed at MAC-level. This uncoordinated behavior makes it difficult to control of sleep timing. In addition, frequent state transitions betw...
